Materials & Care

Product Care
Handcrafted locally by Detroit Malletworks from sustainably-sourced hard maple, this tool naturally darkens and scars with use. This is natural and adds to the beauty of a well-loved tool. To gently clean your mallet, we encourage the following:

  • Brush off crumbs and wipe clean with a damp cloth, or rinse with mild soap and water. Hand dry with a towel.
  • Use a stiff bristle brush to remove sticky substances, then wipe away residue with a damp cloth.
  • Berries and citrus foods may affect the natural finish if left on for extended periods. If staining occurs, lightly sand the affected area, then apply cutting board oil to restore the finish.
  • Never let you mallet soak in water. Wood is porous and will absorb liquid, causing warping.
  • Never put your mallet in the dishwasher or use abrasive or chemical cleaning products.
  • We recommend pounding raw met only with an impenetrable barrier, such as plastic wrap or butcher paper. Direct contact with raw meat creates unsanitary conditions that are difficult to properly sanitize.

Leather Straps

  • The leather strap featured on the Bump Mallet is made of high-quality leather and will last many lifetimes.
  • The strap is vegetable-tanned leather, which will take on a slightly darker hue with age. Applying a coconut oil or a leather specialty oil will hasten the process.
